les rencontres d’arles 2012

On the occasion of the 43rd International Festival of Rencontres d’Arles Photographie (02/07-23/09 2012), RM outlines its decennial course through an atelier exhibition at the Ateliers Electriques SNCF and with a dedicated book, not a simple catalogue but a visible and usable memory of the intercultural and multidisciplinary contributions marking this quest: a broad panorama of the most significant photographic works carried out by its present and graduate students as well as previously unpublished contributions from modern-day thinkers, critics and experts who have been closely involved in this adventure in fieri.

Monday, July 2nd (morning), Ateliers SNCF, av. Victor Hugo – Arles: inauguration of the exhibition “Atelier REFLEXIONS MASTERCLASS 2002 2012. Une aventure artistique Giorgia Fiorio, Gabriel Bauret”, by Gabriel Bauret and Giovanna Calvenzi.

On July 4th, Association du Méjan, Place Nina Berberova – Arles: presentation of the book
“REFLEXIONS MASTERCLASS 2002 PHOTOGRAPHIES 2012. Une aventure artistique / An artistic adventure”, published by Editions Actes Sud and available from July.

On July 5th, 10h30 Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Photographie de Arles – ENSP:  meeting and discussion among RM current and veteran students and ENSP principals about future Reflexions Masterclass collaborative integration to the Arles school twinning the Venetian Università Ca’ Foscari.
EXHIBITION TECHNICAL FILE:
The exhibition is celebrating the ten years activity of Reflexions Masterclass founded by Giorgia Fiorio and unfolded over the years in collaboration with Gabriel Bauret. The exhibition conveys the spirit of this experience, centered on research and dialogue, in the exchange of cultures and visual sensitivity.
Two axes structure the space of the exhibition, articulating over two separated panels facing each other, the number ten marking the rhythm of the installation: an ensemble of photographs encompassing the visual transcription of ten THEMES assigned over ten years different sessions of Reflexions Masterclass and a selection of PERSONAL PROJECTS by ten photographers having participated in the masterclass since its creation in 2002. A total of some forty artists are represented here, among many more having participated and shared this same very unique adventure.
The trees symbol of Reflexions Masterclass will welcome from the outside the visitors towards a minimalist and sober ambulatory, a laboratory for creation and dialogue.

The book presents a broad panorama of the most significant photographic work carried out over the last ten years:
we have chosen to present a selection of long-term projects by 10 artists which alternate with the works based on 10 subjects (themes). Furthermore, ten institutional works, “IW”, can be viewed at the venues which have so far hosted Reflexions Masterclass seminar sessions all around Europe.
Beyond the wealth of approaches and its iconographic diversity, the book also features previously unpublished contributions from modern-day thinkers, critics and experts who have been closely involved in this multidisciplinary adventure, including Régis Debray, Jean-Luc Monterosso, Victor I. Stoichita, and many more, who presented the secret theme assigned to photographers and participated in the collective review conducted during the masterclass seminar sessions.
